Garage Organization: Old Clutter, New Home

My wife and I enjoy having space to do the things we love. We own a lot of large, recreational and building equipment, including a router table, a table saw, dart boards and bikes. Unfortunately, all our gear fit awkwardly in our small 1½-car garage. We love our new home, but we knew we needed to maximize the garage space to make it as inviting and functional as possible.

To start the garage organization process, I repainted the walls and epoxied the floors, which brightened and opened up the room. After streamlining the electrical, I added height to the garage by installing LED shop lights flush against the ceiling.

I continued the process by installing GearWall® Panels to hang and display all of my tools. Before, I had to worry about stud placement whenever I wanted to store something on the wall. Now that I have a GearTrack® system in place, I have the flexibility to use the entire space. And it doesn’t hurt that my gear looks pretty darn good up there, too.

Our garage came with repurposed kitchen cabinets, countertops and a (more or less) usable workbench. The thing is, they didn’t work well together as a whole unit. I wanted a workspace system that looked less haphazard and much more efficient. To accomplish this, I installed Premier Series 24″ Wall GearBoxes and wall-mounted Premier Series Tall GearBoxes. These products perfectly complemented our new Adjustable Height 8 ft. Maple Workbench and Adjustable Height 4 ft. Maple Workbench.

What’s really nice about these workbenches is that our 7-Drawer Base Tool Chest and 10-Drawer 52″ Base Tool Chest slide easily underneath them, making everything fit within the same footprint. Now I have more than enough space to store and display loose equipment and sporting gear. By hanging these on the GearTrack® system, I have more room below to store heavier equipment.

We used to dump our supplies all over the floor and stack them up against the walls. This left us just enough room to park our car. Our new 45″ GearLoft™ Shelf and 48″ GearLoft™ Shelf help get loose items out of the way while keeping them easily accessible. We’ve reclaimed valuable floor space in the process, making room for projects I’ve been keeping in my back pocket. We even have extra space to entertain. The attractive, high-quality finish of our Gladiator® products works as a great surface for drinks and snacks whenever we host people at our place.

When we moved into our new home, we brought our old clutter with us. Now our garage has way more room to breathe — and so do we. It’s pretty awesome to be able to start every day and every project in an organized space.
