It is officially summer, with August right around the corner. If you’re anything like me, you are wondering where in the world the time has gone. But I also have become slightly nervous, as it also means we are in the long stretch before back to school. All of the new and exciting activities to do with my boys have grown old and they are officially beginning to become bored and tiresome of the same routine. Perhaps you don’t have kids but are looking for the next fun and exciting activity to engage in. Why not fly a kite? Yes, fly a kite.
I have the pleasure of living near the beach where the cool breeze off Lake Michigan is a constant and welcomed friend. When thinking of the next “big idea” to do with my boys, the thought of flying a kite came across my mind. Surely, I could remember how to fly a kite. We waited for the perfect day – the sun was shining, the air was crisp, the heat an arm’s length away with the gentle but strong breeze rolling across the silky sand of the beach.
My husband and I grabbed our boys and went for it. I will admit it took us both a minute to figure it out, but once the kites were in the air, the smiles of pure joy from my children made it all worth it. Running across the beach, seeing how high the kite could go in the air was a moment of pride and one I will not forget. It was a time of happiness and excitement for our entire family and brought me back to my own childhood. And when the kite took a major dive into the sand, we all laughed and started over again.
Go ahead and try it out or perhaps look back to your own childhood and reflect on the activities you once enjoyed. The next “big idea” may just surprise you and be the hit of the summer with you and your family. To get you started, why not trying out the following ideas:
• Use your Gladiator® workbench as a makeshift table for projects best suited to be completed outside – build your own kite, create a picture collage of your favorite things, put together your favorite model car
• Grab the basketball from your Gladiator® ball caddy and play a game of H.O.R.S.E.
• Hang a tire from a branch, and let your kids experience the sensation of flight at home
• Make the most of your backyard to good messy fun with a sprinkler party
So what are you waiting for? Grab your family, your favorite memory and make this summer one not to forget.
